How do I start my journey with Christ?

Home » Start My Journey With Christ

It has been said that the hardest journey begins with the first step.  So…the hardest part of your journey has already begun. You are actually looking for someone who has already been waiting to meet you right here for some time.

The following steps are listed to simply guide you through the start of this journey.  Let Jesus continue to lead you as you respond:

First, we must admit that we are sinners and must give an account for our life before God.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…” (Romans 3:23, ESV)

Second, we need to recognize the seriousness of our sin.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23, ESV)

Third, we must believe that Jesus Christ died for us on the cross, was buried, and rose from the dead. He could only do this because He is God’s Son sent to us to save us through His perfect life, death, and resurrection.  He did this so that His righteousness can replace your sin and give you the ability to have a relationship with a holy God.

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21, ESV)

Fourth, we need to confess and receive Him as Savior and Lord.

“…because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9, ESV)

Now here is the moment of decision.  Can you continue your life as a follower of Jesus Christ?  If so, you no longer have to be shackled by sin. Because of His perfect life sacrificed for you, you no longer have to try to live perfectly.  Good people don’t go to heaven – only forgiven ones do. Are you ready to make that decision? If you are, you can go to Jesus in prayer and tell Him your desire to receive forgiveness for sin and start an eternal relationship with Him.

There is nothing magic in the words you say to Jesus.  This is a moment to be real before Him and confess your desire to follow Him, surrendering your life to His authority.  You might want to pray something like this, and say the words out loud so you can hear them:

Jesus, I admit that I am a sinner and I am sorry for my sins and the life that I have lived. Thank You for dying on the cross to pay the penalty for my sin. I now receive You as my Savior and Lord. Take control of my life and make me the kind of person You want me to be. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Did you pray that prayer? If you did, you can have the assurance that Christ is in your life. The Apostle John wrote, “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life” (I John 5:13, ESV)
